Veteran of Iraq, Running in Ohio, Is Harsh on Bush

I think I like this guy already.

"In the Second Congressional District of Ohio, which Republicans have controlled for the last two decades, the quickest route to political oblivion could be the one chosen by Paul L. Hackett: calling President Bush a 'chicken hawk' for not serving in Vietnam and harshly criticizing the decision to invade Iraq."

Well, what's he got to lose? If he doesn't win, he says he'll go back to Iraq. What's worse - Iraq or Washington? (Personally I'd rather have him in Washington. If he teams up with Conyers, I might even start watching CSPAN.)

My favorite quote from Hackett so far:

"In a public forum, he called Mr. Bush the biggest threat facing the United States."

It gets better...

"A lean 6-foot-4, he is garrulous, profane and quick with a barbed retort or a mischievous joke."

Apparently just as amoral (or pragmatic, depending on my mood) as the rest of them, too - this guy may stand a chance in Washington, if he can make it there.

"Mr. Hackett has also tried to exploit Mr. Bush's popularity here, opening his lone television commercial with Mr. Bush saying, 'There is no higher calling than service in our armed forces.'
Republicans have derided the spot as hypocritical. 'I want to win,' Mr. Hackett replied."

Good luck, Paul Hackett. You'll need it. Oh, and you'll need to get you some voting machines. Ohio's not the best state for voting practices, in case you missed the last election.

Good afternoon, Andi.

Given that I have some pretty decent contacts in Ohio, it might be possible to give this man some help from here in the Blogosphere.

Ohio has a few small points of light for the future of the Democratic Party, and they're not coming from what one might call the "mainstream" or the "politically blessed." The entire game, though, is going to depend upon circumstances now erupting in the Republicans' faces in the Buckeye State: their own corruption is finally getting even the Right-wing Columbus Dispatch fed up. Put that together with a sustained, if rather poorly covered, pressure point being applied by Bob Fitrakis of the Columbus Free Press, and you've got the makings of what could, down the road, be a political throw-the-rascals-out festival by the voters of the State.

We'll see.

The Dark Wraith wishes it were easier to have sanity return to politics.
