what not to have at a baby shower

*******

one of my friends at work is due with her second child in may. it's been a while since the first one, and we all love her dearly, so we're throwing her a shower. this is slightly complicated by her upcoming shift change - she's going to third shift in a week and a half and we need to get the shower done before that. so, yeah, a baby shower in a week and a half. no problem - we do this stuff all the time around here - nothing we like better than a chance to eat.

so i'm getting compulsive and checking out ideas for showers and decorations online, finding a lot of lousy entries from well-meaning ladies with entirely too much time on their hands. but this one took the cake (as it were):

"This is a very inexpensive but cute gift idea for the guests to take home. You will need:

standard plastic spoons (blue or pink) or both
lace to glue all around the outer edges of the spoons
large cotton balls, to be glued to each bowl of the spoon
small plastic babies to be glued on top of the cotton ball (plastic babies can be bought at almost any cake supply store, I got them for 10 cents each)

Put this all together it looks very cute and quite a conversation piece.

To add a special touch I typed a little label with the mom's name and date of the baby shower on my computer and then cut out each label to fit the inside part of the handle on the spoon. And for a final touch made a little bow and glued it just above the cotton ball.

I amazed myself, and loved each one. If you have any questions you can e-mail me."

yeah ok i have some questions. how is it that you can be amazed by the combination of plastic spoons, cotton balls, teeny plastic babies, hot glue, and lace? frankly the idea makes me want to tear my eyes out. "quite a conversation piece..." i can only imagine. and on top of the visual travesty, to give them to the guests as favors... well. ahem.

fortunately, there were better ideas elsewhere, although i will have to pass on the diaper cake this time. i'd rather handle the food (big surprise.)

to those of you tuning in today who have made efforts to create such an unholy amalgamation of crap, i very much apologize for having belittled your efforts.

i strongly encourage you to bake cookies next time.

really - lol the things they come up with.

My standard shower gift is a couple of dozen cloth diapers, and some cotton wrapping blankets. Not very exciting, but the most useful baby accouterments of all, ever!!!.. - even if you use paper diapers, the cloth ones come in handy for spit up rags(shoulder pads) and such....
